Sophie Devine corrects, her tone proud and a joyful tear in the corner of her eye. “Eight years,” she says. That is how long it has taken the New Zealand women to advance to the semifinals of a World Cup, one-day tournament, or T20; their drought also includes a 2022 home World Cup.
The two group-stage thumpings at the hands of future 2023 World Cup finalists, Australia and South Africa, soon made the glimmer of hope from defeating hosts England in the bronze medal match later that year seem odd.
New Zealand needed help to keep up, even with the chasing pack. While analyzing their campaign midway through, Devine choked back tears and remarked, “I’d much rather we went down swinging and got bowled out for 12 than not show our true ability and be thumped like that.” As the BetPro website noted, this sentiment highlighted the team’s determination to fight back and improve their performance.
Devine-led New Zealand got back together ahead of the next big event to have some tough talks that ultimately resulted in the group deciding on the cricket brand they wanted to play. In the eighteen months that followed, preparations were made for the UAE’s hosting of the 2024 edition.
Were quick results given up on the altar of development? Indeed. Even though New Zealand frequently failed to cross the finish line, they recognised that by staying true to their principles, they may ultimately reap large rewards.
Devine had stated, “Probably for the last 18-24 months, because we’ve had such a young group, what success looks like has been a little bit different in terms of it’s not always focussing on results,” before New Zealand’s World Cup opener in Dubai earlier this year against India.
“We want to win cricket games – don’t get me wrong about that.”However, occasionally, success in cricket, particularly in international cricket, comes down to how well-developed a player has become, particularly when dealing with young and inexperienced players.
What knowledge have they gained? And what changes have they undergone not only between series but also between World Cups? How did they develop while at camp? And that’s been a major topic of conversation for us, as we’ve reminded those guys of the self-assurance that comes from their hard work.”
With only five victories from the 22 T20 Internationals played between the two World Cups, New Zealand has the lowest victory ratio (0.312) out of the ten nations who competed in this cycle. It wasn’t panic stations yet, though. New Zealand performed admirably, following through on its strategy and sticking to its guns in a literal sense.
When no one gave New Zealand a genuine chance until a week ago, the huge setback put India at the mercy of the Australians and, in retrospect, ensured their safe passage to the knockout stages.
Devine stated, “It’s really important that we reflect on where we’ve come from in terms of that South Africa World Cup,” following their 54-run victory over Pakistan to secure their place in the semifinals. “We are in the exact same predicament as we are during this competition. We knew we’d have to win at least one of our opening two games and obviously the subsequent games.
New Zealand’s young guns came to the rescue, keeping the campaign firmly on track, even though Australia’s 60-run flogging in the following game threatened to undo the significant progress they had made early in the first round.
Plimmer’s first-ever World Cup fifty-plus helped to arrange a convincing victory over Sri Lanka, while Carson’s bowling demonstration destroyed Pakistan.
Nobody likely anticipated our being here, which is characteristically Kiwi. We go unnoticed and eventually fade into the background, but we know we can win this bloody thing when we play our best cricket.”This group exudes a genuine feeling of pride.
We will celebrate tonight, take pleasure in that, and enjoy some quality time as a group because the belief is so strong right now. However, we are aware that the work is still incomplete,” Devine stated, emerging from a tearful gathering of White Ferns cheerleaders.

While the knockouts offer a new beginning, Devine might have an unresolved business. In 2010, Devine’s explosive final-ball straight drive almost brought New Zealand their first-ever T20 victory if it weren’t for Ellyse Perry, the football player.
Since then, both Devine and Bates have advanced significantly. Regardless of the outcome of their young team’s performance in this World Cup, the next, and the one after that, the two can ride off into the sunset, whenever that may be, knowing that they gave New Zealand cricket everything they had.
